Small Non-Pleasure Domestic Vessel Basic Safety Course (SDV-BS)

(formerly Marine Emergency Duties – MED A3)

Small Non-Pleasure Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS) is a course developed to comply with subsection 205 (3) of the 2007 Marine Personnel Regulations and the applicability of the course depends upon the type of voyage and the voyage class.
   NOTE: This course replaces the old MED A3 course.

Our SDV-BS course is approved by Transport Canada and is a requirement for all persons employed on small commercial vessels (before completing 6 months of work at sea).
This course provides Basic Safety training for crew of non-pleasure vessels of not more than 150 gross tonnage, operating not more than 25 nautical miles from shore.

This course is intended for Crew Members of non-pleasure vessels including: Commercial Fishing, Crew Boats, Work Boats, etc.

Aims and Objectives of Training:
To enable course participants to acquire knowledge, understanding, and proficiency in:

  • a basic understanding of the hazards related to the marine environment and their own vessel, and of how to prevent shipboard incidents including fire
  • the knowledge they need to raise and react to alarms and deal with emergencies
  • an ability to provide assistance in fire and abandonment situations
  • the knowledge and skills to help them in their own survival and rescue

This course meets the requirements of Transport Canada TP Document 4957, Small Non-Pleasure Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS).
